Havana Carolina in Concord, NC: A Little Taste of Cuba Near Charlotte

Cubano and Yuca Fries from Havana Carolina in Concord, NC

One of the things I love most about exploring North Carolina is discovering places that make you feel like you’ve traveled much farther than your GPS says you have.

That’s exactly what happened the first time we visited Havana Carolina in downtown Concord. You don’t just come here for dinner. You come here for an experience. From the moment you walk through the doors, the music, colorful décor, warm hospitality, and incredible aromas make it feel like you’ve stepped into a neighborhood café in Havana instead of a restaurant in North Carolina.

My husband is from Puerto Rico, so he’s pretty picky when it comes to Caribbean food. Puerto Rico and Cuba are close neighbors, and while each island has its own distinct traditions, they also share many flavors and culinary influences. Finding a place that reminds him of home isn’t easy…but this is one restaurant he asks to come back to again and again.

If you’re looking for a meal that’s about more than just food, Havana Carolina deserves a spot on your Cabarrus County bucket list.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the menu. It was the atmosphere. Almost immediately, the sounds of Latin music filled the room, conversations buzzed around us, and there was an energy that made the entire restaurant feel alive.

There’s something incredibly welcoming about the space. It doesn’t feel rushed or overly formal. That warmth is intentional. Havana Carolina is a family-owned restaurant dedicated to sharing authentic Cuban flavors and culture with every guest, creating an experience that feels as much about hospitality as it is about the food.

The Atmosphere

Some restaurants serve a meal. Havana Carolina creates a destination. The décor, the music, and the friendly service all work together to transport you somewhere completely different. If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of their live music evenings, the experience becomes even more memorable. Live Latin music is a regular part of what makes this restaurant so special.

The Food

Cuban cuisine is all about bold flavors, slow-cooked meats, comforting sides, and recipes that have been passed down through generations. Everything we ordered tasted fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. My personal favorite?

The Cuban Sandwich. The crispy pressed bread, perfectly seasoned pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard came together exactly the way a great Cuban sandwich should.

And then there were the yuca fries. If you’ve never tried yuca before, this is the place to do it. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the perfect side to complement the sandwich. Plus, ask for the garlic sauce for dipping…it’s unbelievably delicious!

The menu also features traditional Cuban favorites like Ropa Vieja, Vaca Frita, Lechón Asado, seafood dishes, tropical cocktails, and homemade desserts.

What We Loved Most

Some restaurants are memorable because of one incredible dish. Others stand out because of the atmosphere. Havana Carolina manages to do both. The food is excellent, but what keeps drawing us back is how the entire experience makes you feel. You don’t feel like you’re simply eating dinner. You feel like you’ve stepped into another culture for an evening. That’s something you don’t find every day.

Why Families Will Love It

One of my favorite things about Havana Carolina is that it’s a wonderful place to introduce kids and teens to something beyond their usual restaurant rotation. Trying a new cuisine together often leads to some of the best conversations.

“What does this taste like?”

“You have to try a bite of this.”

“I think I found my new favorite.”

Those shared moments are exactly why we love exploring local restaurants.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Best For

  • Family dinners
  • Date nights
  • Celebrating special occasions
  • Visitors exploring Concord
  • Anyone wanting to experience authentic Cuban cuisine

🍽️ What to Order

If you’re visiting for the first time, I highly recommend:

  • The Cuban Sandwich
  • Yuca Fries

If you’re feeling more adventurous, explore one of the restaurant’s traditional Cuban entrées like Ropa Vieja or Lechón Asado, both of which showcase the rich, home-style flavors Cuban cuisine is known for.

📷 Don’t Miss

If there’s live music during your visit…

Stay.

The music transforms an already wonderful dinner into an unforgettable evening.

💡 Local Tip

Check their live music schedule before planning your visit. A dinner accompanied by live Latin music makes the experience even more immersive.

Parking behind the building can fill up quickly. There’s a parking deck down the street that offers free parking and Downtown Concord is very walkable. I recommend parking in the parking deck and walking through the downtown area shops and explore more after eating.

Nearby Places to Explore

One of the best things about Havana Carolina is its location in historic downtown Concord.

After dinner, take some time to explore the area:

  • Browse the locally owned shops downtown
  • Grab dessert nearby at Two Scoops Creamery
  • Visit The Basement Arcade Bar across the street for unlimited classic video games and pinball.

It’s easy to turn one great meal into an entire afternoon of exploring Downtown Concord.

🚗 Is Havana Carolina Worth the Drive?

Without question. Yes, the food is delicious. But what makes Havana Carolina special is that it gives you something so many restaurants don’t. An experience. You leave feeling like you’ve traveled somewhere new, learned a little about another culture, and shared something memorable with the people sitting around your table.

Those are the kinds of restaurants we always remember.

📒 Melissa’s Notebook

There are restaurants you visit because you’re hungry. Then there are restaurants you visit because they make you feel something. Walking into Havana Carolina instantly changed the pace of the day. The music, the warm welcome, and the feeling that everyone was there simply to enjoy good food and good company reminded me that some of the best adventures don’t require a passport.

Sometimes all it takes is being willing to try somewhere new. That’s one of my favorite parts of exploring North Carolina.

The Takeaway

If you’re simply looking for a quick dinner, there are plenty of places to eat in Concord. But if you’re looking for a restaurant where the atmosphere is every bit as memorable as the meal, Havana Carolina delivers.

Come for the Cuban sandwich.

Order the yuca fries.

Stay for the music, the hospitality, and the feeling that, for just a little while, you’ve been transported to Havana.

It’s more than a meal.

It’s an experience and one that’s absolutely worth the drive.
