The Escape Game at Concord Mills: One of the Best Indoor Things to Do Near Charlotte with Teens

The Escape Game at Concord Mills, NC

When North Carolina summers crank the thermostat into the triple digits, it doesn’t take long before the kids are complaining that it’s too hot to do anything outside. We’ve all been there. The pool is crowded. The playground equipment is too hot to touch. Even walking from the parking lot feels like an Olympic sport.

That’s exactly how we found ourselves looking for something different; something that would keep four teenagers entertained without hearing, “I’m bored.”

Our answer? The Escape Game at Concord Mills in Concord, North Carolina. Within minutes of stepping inside, everyone forgot it was nearly 100 degrees outside.

First Impressions

If you’ve never experienced an escape room before, it’s something everyone should try out at least once! The moment the door closes behind you, you’re transported into a completely different world. Every detail, from the lighting and sound effects to the props and hidden compartments, helps tell the story. You’re trapped and have 60 minutes to solve different riddles and puzzles in order to complete the task and escape. It’s a cooperative experience where instead of competing against each other, like bowling or pickleball, everyone works together to achieve a common goal.

The Escape Room at Concord Mills doesn’t feel like solving puzzles in a basic room…their theming is top knotch. It feels like you’re living inside the adventure. Whether you’re breaking out of prison, uncovering hidden secrets in a Mediterranean market, or racing against the clock on a high-stakes mission, each room creates an immersive experience that pulls everyone in.

We chose to experience the Gold Rush escape room and it did not disappoint!

The Experience

As a mom of 2 teens who seem to bicker ALL THE TIME, I love activities that require teamwork, and this one delivered. Instead of everyone splitting off to do their own thing, we found ourselves searching every corner for clues, solving riddles together, debating theories, and celebrating every small victory.

The Gold Rush escape room has you searching for the lost gold that’s been hidden by your crazy uncle who unexpectedly passes away. Your team has to work together to break into his hunting cabin and solve the clues so you can find your way to the gold mine. Once in the mine, you have to discover where the gold is hidden…all with the clock counting down each second.

There were plenty of laughs. A little friendly arguing. Several “Wait… I think I figured it out!” moments. And lots of high-fives every time another puzzle clicked into place. What surprised me most was watching our teenagers completely forget about their phones.

For an entire hour, they were fully engaged with each other. That’s becoming harder and harder to find, which made this experience feel even more worthwhile.

Why Families with Teens Will Love It

The Escape Game at Concord Mills is one of those rare attractions that older kids genuinely enjoy. Unlike many family activities that feel geared toward younger children, escape rooms challenge everyone equally. Parents, teens, grandparents, and friends all contribute in different ways.

Someone notices a hidden clue, solves the math puzzle, or remembers a tiny detail everyone else overlooked. Everyone gets their moment to shine. It’s the kind of experience that creates stories you’ll laugh about long after you’ve gone home.

Perfect for Beating the North Carolina Heat

One of the biggest reasons we’d recommend The Escape Game at Concord Mills during the summer? Air conditioning.

When temperatures soar into the upper 90s and beyond, finding activities that let your family stay comfortable while still making memories becomes priceless. Instead of spending the day trying to escape the heat, you’ll spend an hour trying to escape the room.

Booking Your Adventure

You can book your experience directly through The Escape Game, but if you’re planning multiple attractions during a trip, it’s also available through GetYourGuide.

GetYourGuide is a travel platform that lets you discover and reserve experiences around the world, from guided tours and famous attractions to local adventures like this one. It’s especially helpful if you’re planning a vacation and want to organize activities before you arrive, but it’s also a great resource for finding fun experiences close to home.

Memory Maker ⭐

Watching everyone forget about their phones and become completely invested in solving the mystery together. By the end of the game, we weren’t talking about social media, we were reliving our favorite clues, laughing about the mistakes we made, and wondering which room we should tackle next.

Don’t Miss

Take a few minutes before booking to read the descriptions of each themed room. Every adventure offers a completely different storyline, so choose the one that sounds most exciting for your group. There are also different difficulty levels that helps you pick a challenge that’s best suited for your age group. Since I had older teens we picked the Gold Rush because the difficulty level is rated 8/10…which was perfect for us. We found the missing gold with a little over 5 minutes to spare.
